Abstract

Expandable particles containing synthetic plastics material and a blowing agent are formed from a dispersion, solution or suspension of the starting material by dividing it into small volumes, e.g. drops and consolidating these small volumes at least at their surface by heating to form the particles. The starting material may be a suspension or solution of the synthetic plastics material containing a blowing agent. As described the particles may be formed in several ways. The starting material may be placed in a vessel with small apertures in the base and a periodically varying pressure applied to the flexible top of the vessel causing drops to be emitted from the base, or the drops may be centrifugally cast from a rotating vessel. If a pasty starting material is used it may be extruded as strips and sliced into small volumes. In an alternative embodiment, the starting mass is forced through a nozzle surrounded by an annular nozzle through which thermoplastic material is delivered, the resulting threads being divided into sections. Further substances such as inorganic materials, thermoplastics, or elastomers and preferably in the form of fibres may be fed between the starting material and the thermoplastic material.
