1,244,080. Preparation of phenolic esters and phenols. INSTITUT NEFTEKHIMICHESKOGO SINTEZA IMENI A.V. TOPCHIEVA AN SSSR. 17 Dec., 1969, No. 61440/69. Heading C2C. A process for the preparation of a phenolic ester comprises oxidizing an alkylaromatic hydrocarbon or a phenolic ester containing at least one alkyl group in the ring with oxygen, at a temperature of from 100‹ to 300‹ C. and a pressure from 1 to 100 atmosphere, in the presence of an anhydride or acid chloride of a carboxylic acid and of from 0.0006 to 10 mole per cent of an acid catalyst. The esters produced by the process may be saponified to prepare the corresponding phenols.
