Abstract

1,243,013. Preparation of vulcanizable ethylene-propylene-diene polymers. MONTECATINI EDISON SpA. 12 Sept., 1968 [12 Sept., 1967], No. 43435/68. Heading C3P. An unsaturated, vulcanizable polymer of ethylene, propylene and a non-conjugated di- or poly-enic hydrocarbon monomer, having respective monomeric molar contents of 70 to 85%, 15 to 30%, and 0.05 to 3%, and being amorphous in the relaxed state but crystallizable on stretching, is obtained by polymerization in the presence of a vanadium compound and an organoaluminium compound, the molar ratio of propylene to ethylene being from 0.5 to 1À5:1. In the examples, the termonomer is 6- methyl - tetrahydroindene, 5,7 - dimethyl octadiene - 1,6 or 4 - vinyl cyclohexene - 1, the catalyst is Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl or Al 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Cl 3 and VOCl 3 or vanadium tris acetylacetonate, and the polymers obtained are subjected to vulcanization using e.g. sulphur monochloride, sulphur and zinc oxide, optionally with the usual accelerators and also silica after forming into thin plates, and the vulcanized product subjected to stretching.
