Abstract
Toughened styrene polymers are made by polymerizing styrene or an ar-methylstyrene, with or without comonomers, in the presence of 1 to 20%, based on the weight of the styrene polymer of an unsaturated copolymer rubber made by copolymerizing two or more alpha-olefins together with 0.5 to 15% of a compound containing at least two non-conjugated ethylenic linkages. Preferred alpha-olefins are ethylene and propylene. Comonomers specified for use with the styrene are alpha-methyl-styrene, chlorostyrenes, acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate. The examples describe dissolving copolymer rubber in styrene monomer and polymerizing the resulting solutions in the presence of di-tertiary butyl peroxide.
