Abstract

1,241,372. Synthetic lubricant. LUBRIZOL CORP. 16 April, 1969 [26, June, 1968], No. 19500/69. Heading C5F. A lubricant comprises a major amount of a carboxylic acid ester and a minor amount of a composition comprising (a) 5-30 parts by wt. of an acylated alkylene polyamine or hydroxysubstituted alkylene polyamine having at least one acyl, acyloxy or acylimidoyl radical, containing at least 54 aliphatic carbon atoms, attached directly to a nitrogen atom; (b) 5-15 parts of basic alkaline earth metal sulphonate, (c) 5-70 parts of a compound wherein each of R and R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl, cycloaltyl, aralkyl or alkaryl radical and M is the equivalent of a Gp. I metal, Gp. II metal, Al, Sn, Co, Pb, Mo, Mn or Ni; (d) 0-20 parts of a basic alkaline earth metal salt of an acidic phosphosulphurized aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon of M.W. at least 500; (e) 0-35 parts of an ester of a C 50 + hydrocarbon substituted succinic acid; (f) 0-60 parts of a basic alkaline earth metal salt of an alkyl phenol sulphide; the lubricant containing no more than 15% by wt. of mineral oil. Preferred components are (a) alkylene polyamine substituted by an acyl; acyloxy or acylimidoyl radical derived from a hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid; (b) a calcium sulphonate; (c) zinc dialkyl phosphorodithioate; (d) a barium salt; (e) an acidic pentaerythritol ester of substituted succinic acid; (f) a calcium salt. Synthetic base fluids used in the examples include diisodecyl azelate, isodecylpelargonate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) ester of linoleic acid dimer, di-(tridecyl) phthalate and mixtures thereof. A polyalkylmethacrylate VI improver may also be present.
