Abstract
1,241,015. Glass melting furnaces. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 2 May, 1969 [4 May, 1968], No. 21242/68. Heading F4B. In a glass melting furnace the side walls 1 of the tank are chamfered at 2 in the region where the surface 3 of the molten glass 4 contacts the walls. The chamfer, which is shown to be of plane form and is said to preclude the surface 3 from forming a meniscus at the point of contact, may alternatively be convex (Fig. 6, not shown) or concave (Fig. 7, not shown). The angle of inclination of the chamfer to the horizontal at the point where the surface 3 contacts each side wall lies within the range 30 to 50 degrees.
