Abstract

1,240,790. Feeding webs. TUNZINI AMELIORAIR. 22 Dec., 1969 [24 Dec., 1968], No. 62298/69. Heading B8R. [Also in Division F4] An installation for the treatment, e.g. drying, of strip material comprises a series of treatment chambers 1 provided with openings 3 which discharge a gas to support and treat the strip; a plurality of rollers 6 for supporting and guiding the strip in its passage between the chambers 1; a supply source 41 for strip material 2; a pair of co-operating feed rollers 7, 8 for drawing the strip through the installation; and a device for the initial threading of the strip through the installation, the device including an endless belt 10 which passes over pulleys (11), Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) mounted co-axially through a free-wheel device (14) with the rollers 6 and which is provided with a gripper 12 for the web. The pulleys (11) are driven in synchronism with the feed rollers 7, 8 by a common motor 9 and the arrangement is such that the rollers 6 can rotate at a peripheral speed greater than the linear speed of the belt 10 should the linear speed of the strip increase as it passes through the installation; such an increase could arise from longitudinal shrinkage during treatment. The threading device may include two endless belts (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) and the gripper 12 (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown) may be arranged so that it respectively clamps and releases the strip automatically at the beginning and end of the threading operation. The installation may include a tension-sensing arrangement 42 which controls the speed of the motor 9 in dependence upon tension variations, and a pivoted centring roller 50 which controls the lateral position of the strip in response to signals derived from detectors sensing deviations of the movement of the strip from a desired path.
