Abstract

1,240,643. Ignition devices. RONSON CORP. 11 July, 1968 [11 July, 1967], No. 31921/67. Heading F4F. An ignition device for a cigarette lighter 15 comprises a housing 1 in which is movably mounted a cartridge 2 having an outlet 3 and an actuating boss 4 and containing a spontaneously combustible substance, the cartridge 2 being movable from an inoperative position in which the outlet 3 is masked by the housing 1 and the boss 4 is out of alignment with an actuating hammer 7 to an operative position in which the outlet 3 projects through a hole 23 in the casing and the boss 4 and hammer 7 are aligned. The cartridge 2 is biased to the inoperative position by springs (not shown) and, when the housing 1 is mounted on the lighter 15, is lifted by two pins 16 on the lighter 15, which pins pass through keyhole slots 18 in the housing 1 and engage in recesses 19 in a base 5 to which the cartridge is secured. The housing 1 is then moved to the right so that the outlet 3 projects through the hole 23, and is retained in place by a spring-urged plunger 17. A pivotable fingerpiece 10 on the housing 1 has a spring arm 12 which rotates the hammer 7 clockwise against a spring 9 when the fingerpiece 10 is depressed. The spring arm 12 then slips off the hammer 7 which rotates to strike the boss 4 to cause the cartridge 2 to eject some of the combustible substance. In a second embodiment (Figs. 4-6, not shown), the housing 1 contains only the cartridge 2, the hammer 7 and its operating mechanism being part of the lighter.
