Abstract
1,240,011. Antistatic films and filaments. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 24 July, 1968 [27 July, 1967; 13 Oct., 1967], No. 35392/68. Heading B5B. An antistatic unidirectionally oriented film or filament comprises a melt-shapable synthetic resin in which are dispersed, as an independent phase, elongated particles of a polyether-polyamide block copolymer which contains 15-70% of the polyether component and preferably contains 34-150 ether linked 0- atoms per polyether block; the particles having their longitudinal axes substantially parallel to their direction of orientation and at least 80% thereof having an average diameter not more than 1À0 Á and a length: diameter ratio of at least 20; the ratio of the melt-viscosities of the block copolymer and synthetic resin at the melt-shaping temperature being preferably 0À9 -10; and the block copolymer: synthetic resin weight ratio being preferably such that the total polyether content is 0À1-20%. The film or filament is made by melt extrusion, the molten components being mixed for a period not exceeding 1 hour, and the extruded product is given an initial draft of at least 10. In the case of filaments these may be of Y cross-section (Example 1) or composite (Example 5). In examples the block copolymers contain polyethylene- or polyethylene-propylene ether units with blocks of poly - # - caprolactam, polycaproamide, polyhexamethylene diamine, and/ or poly - # - capryllactam. Synthetic resins exemplified are various nylons, polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene. Comparative examples disclose similar products which do not fall wholly within all the conditions given above.
