Abstract
1,139,228. Die casting-machines. PLASCO Ltd. 18 Nov., 1966 [22 Dec., 1965], No. 51826/66. Heading B3F. In a magnesium die casting machine in which molten magnesium is pressure fed from a hot chamber 14 of a holding ladle 10 through a gooseneck 13 and a heated nozzle 15 into a cavity 20 of a die 18, the holding ladle 10 is pivotally mounted on a shaft 30 and swung into and out of engagement with the die 18 about the shaft 30 by a lever having arms 32, 34 and actuated by a cam 39. A further cam 46 reciprocates a link 47 and operates valves 55<SP>1</SP> and 59<SP>1</SP> to pressurize the chamber 14 with an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, to force a shot of molten magnesium into the die 18, and then to exhaust the chamber. The rotation of the cam shaft 37 cyclically engages the nozzle 15 with a die 18, injects molten magnesium into the die, exhausts pressure from the chamber 14 and withdraws the nozzle 15. Heaters 17 and 24 are provided for the chamber 14 and nozzle 15, and detachable connections are provided to a pyrometer 22 and the gas supply 56 to enable a ladle to be removed, with or without the cover unit 41, for re-charging with molten magnesium. In a modification the shot of molten magnesium is produced by forcing down a floating piston into the chamber 14 by mechanical, hydraulic or air actuated means.
