A plate or sheet metal clamp has a spring-loaded pin or pin assembly slidably carried by a holder 1 for insertion in registering holes of overlapping plates or sheets to be rivetted or otherwise secured together and operated by the spring loading for clamping the plate or sheet between a shouldered end portion of the pin or shouldered end portions of the pin assembly and the forward end of the holder, the pin or pin assembly being extendible from the holder by means of a plunger 16 protruding from the rear end of the holder and arranged for operation by a pliers-like tool adapted to engage the holder and plunger for depressing the latter into the holder in order to axially move the pin or pin assembly against its spring loading in the latter, the plunger having a head 16a arranged to act upon the pin or pin assembly, the plunger being retentively held by a collar 20 about the plunger and fitted in the rear end portion of the holder. The construction shown has a pin assembly consisting of two pin members 9a of complementary form which pass through washers 12 and 15, the washer 12 being at the forward end and the washer 15 at the rearward end, the end portions 9c of the pin members being outwardly bent against the rear face of the washer 15; the loading spring 11 is trapped between the two washers 12, 15 and between the forward end portions of the two pin members is a member 13 having a transverse lug which is engaged by the spring 11 to hold the member 13 in position, the member 13 having a rearward part 14 which extends within the spring 11 and a tongue 10 which passes through the washer 12 between the two pin members and together with the forward end portions of the pin members passes through an opening in the front end of the holder so that the shouldered forward end portion 9b of the pin members are outside the holder. The rear end portion of the holder is of increased wall thickness so that its outer periphery is of enlarged diameter to provide an external shoulder 6 for engagement by a forked jaw of the pliers-like tool; the external shoulder 6 is faced with a metal bearing washer 7. The collar 20 is a force fit in the holder and its exterior periphery is milled to provide biting engagement with the material of the holder; for ease of assembly it has a slight external taper. The holder is made of a plastics material. When a pin is provided instead of the pin assembly shown the pin is locally recessed at one side and co-operates with a complementary shrouding which extends from the forward end of the holder.
