1 Claim.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly to a hammer or similar tool head having associated therewith a dog for firmly holding the tool head npon a handle and very effectively preventing the head from working loose and slipping off of the handle.
One object of the invention is to provide the tool head with a fastener so formed and so mounted that it may be forced into nrrn gripping engagement with the handle after the head has been applied to the handle, provision being made for releasing the fastener when lit is desired to remove a broken handle and apply a new one.
Another object of the invention is to provide the tool head with a fastener consisting of dog pivotally mounted in a recess formed in the tool head so that the head may be easily applied to a handle, the dog being forced into gripping engagement with the handle by a set screw threaded through an opening formed in the shank of the tool head and entering the recess for abutting engagement with the pivoted dog.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool head hlaving a fastener so formed and mounted that a handle of conventional form may be applied to the head.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a side View of a hammer equipped with the improved fastener.
Fig. 2 is a View showing the hammer head in section and the handle in side elevation and secured in the eye of the headby the improved fastener.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken transversely through Figure 1 along the line 3-.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken ailong line 4-41 of Figure l.
The improved fastener has been shown in corporated in a hammer head but it will be understood that axes and other similar tools may be equipped with the improved fastener.
The tool head l has a rearwardly extending shank 2 and longitudinally of this shank the head is formed with an eye 3 to receive the tapered forward end portion 4 of a handle 5. Within the shank 2 is a longitudinally extending recess or pocket ii :in which is disposed a dog or gripper 'l which extends longitudinally in the pocket and its front end is enlarged to form a head 8 through which la pin 9 passes to pivotally mount the dog for swinging movement towards and away from the bore When the dog is swung towards the bore 3 it enters a recess or notch l formed in the forward portion 4 of the handle 5 where it is held by a set screw Il threaded through an opening l2 formed in the outer side wall of the pocket li. Pressure exerted upon the dog by the set screw forces the dog into close contacting engagement with the inner wall of the recess or notch Ill and the teeth I3 formed across the handle-engaging face of the dog will bite into the confronting wall of the notch and forni recesses defining teeth i4 with which the teeth i3 interengage and firmly hold the handle against rearward movement out of the bore. It will thus be seen that the interengaging teeth 53 and lll will hold the hammer head against 'forward movement cfr" of the handle and that since the rear end of the dog has abutting engagement with a shoulder I5 the head can not shift rearwardly along the handle and cause the front end of the handle to protrude outwardly from the head. When it is desired to remove a broken handle from the head it is merely necessary to loosen the set screw and the dog may then swing about the pin 9 away from the handle and the bro-ken handle may then be shaken or forced out of the bore 3 of the head and a new handle applied.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A tool head formed with a rearwardly extending shank and with a bore extending longitudinally through the shank and the head and tapered toward its front end for its full length, la handle having a tapered forward end position fitting into the bore through the rear end thereof and having a wedging nt therein, the shank being formed internally with a longitudinally extending recess deepened at its front end to form a socket located at the junction of the shank with the head, and a pin along its bottom the handle being formed `with a longitudinally extending recess disposed opposite the recess in the shank and formed with notches across its inner wa-ll, a latch extending ilongitudinally in the recess of said shank and formed at its front end with a hinge ear circular in cross section and fitting into said socket with a portion exposed through the open bottom of the socket, said pin passing transversely through the hinge ear and side walls of the recess :in the shank and pivotally mounting the latch for swinging movement into and out of the recess in the handle, said latch being formed across its inner side face with forwardly facing teeth for engaging in the notches of the recess in the handle and securing the head against for-ward movement olf of the handle, and a set screw threaded through an opening in the Number Date Horton Apr. 6 1875- Number Number Name Date Powers Dec. 22, 1903 Fixler June 25, 1906 Fitzgerald Dec. 15, 1914 Purnell Sept. 18, 1923 Shepard June 11, 1929 Hogg Dec. 2, 1930 Brock June 19, 1934 FOREIGN PATENTS Country Date Germany Nov. 24, 1921
