Abstract
1,136,350. Polymer compositions. W. R. GRACE & CO. 2 Nov., 1967 [25 Nov., 1966], No. 49930/67. Heading C3P. Compositions comprise a polymer selected from polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and copolymers of at least 50 mole per cent of ethylene, and a circular plate-like filler having a diameter to thickness ratio between 20 : 1 and 300 : 1 and a diameter of at most 30 microns. Specified fillers are platy clays, mica, vermiculite, kaolinite, montmorillonite, platy talc, graphite, platelets of aluminium and bronze, and N-benzoylacetamide. The fillers may be modified by treatment with aluminium, ferric, chromic or zirconium ions. The copolymer may be derived from ethylene and butene-1, vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, methyl methaerylate or ethyl methacrylate. The compositions may be melt-extruded to form non- permeable films, e.g. for food wrapping. The compositions may also comprise dispersants and paraffin wax. Examples describe compositions of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and ethylene/butene - 1 and ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers with stearate treated mica, clay, bentonite and vermiculite.
