Abstract
1,132,518. Medicinal compositions. RICHARDSON-MERRELL Inc. 3 Feb., 1966 [18 Feb., 1965], No. 4865/66. Heading A5B. A medicinal composition comprises a substantially clear, transparent liquid comprising (a) from 50% to 89% by volume of benzyl benzoate; (b) from 10% to 49% by volume of a liquid oleaginous diluent; (c) a non-ionic emulsifier having a HLB of from 11.5 to 15 in a quantity sufficient to cause emulsification of said composition in body fluids; and (d) a therapeutically effective quantity of a drug which is soluble in benzyl benzoate. Ingredient (b) may comprise mineral oil or vegetable oils, e.g. fixed oils such as corn oil, cottonseed oil, sesame oil, peanut oil or olive oil. Suitable emulsifiers include "Spans", "Tweens", "Pluronics" (Trade Marks) and polyoxyalkylene fatty acid esters and ethers e.g. polyoxyethylenestearates and lauryl ethers. The composition may also contain co-solvents e.g. ethyl oleate, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycols, ethyl alcohol, dimethylacetamide, N-methylacetamide or dimethyl sulphoxide. The composition may be administered parenterally or orally, e.g. in the form of a soft gelatin capsule. Examples of suitable drugs include hormones, e.g. chlorotrianisene; steroids such as methyl testosterone, testosterone propionate progesterone and cortocoids such as prednisone, prednisolone, hydrocortisone; barbiturates such as phenobarbital, pentobarbital, thiopental, secobarbital and thiamylal; vitamins, e.g. vitamins K, A and D: and antibiotics such as tetracycline, pencillins V and G and procaine penicillin.
