1,131,291. Determining screw pitch. COVENTRY GAUGE & TOOL CO. Ltd. July 28, 1967 [April 29, 1966], No.18838/66. Heading G1A. In a method and apparatus for determining the pitch of a screw, the screw is mounted for rotation, and a stylus freely movable along the length of the screw is made to engage the thread form, the angular rotation of the screw, and the linear motion of the stylus being sensed to provide signals for a computer which indicates or records the pitch. The angular rotation may be read by a photo-electric reader responsive to equally spaced radial lines on a disc coupled with the screw, and the movement of the stylus may be detected by a laser interferometer mounted on the bed to co-operate with a reflector mounted with the stylus. A plurality of styli may engage different parts of the thread grooves. The stylus and reflector may be mounted on the grinding carriage of a grinding machine the reflector being resiliently mounted.
