Abstract
1370307 Photo-electric position measurement BENDIX CORP 22 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 49275/71 Heading G1A [Also in Division G4] Apparatus for measuring displacement comprising a pair of gratings 11, 13 relatively movable in front of photo-cells 21, 22, 23, 24 includes means 34 for interpolating between the grating lines and means for adjusting the spacing of the gratings. The gratings are selected to have a small number of grating lines per millimetre e.g. 40 in which case the apparatus is fairly insensitive to changes of the order of fortieth's of a millimetre in the spacing 30 between the gratings. As described a reading head 12 which is positioned adjacent their reflective scale grating 11, includes the transmissive indexing grating 13 and the four photo-cells 21-24 phase displaced from each other by 90 degrees. The cell outputs are fed in pairs via differential amplifiers 26, 27 which reduce electrical disturbances due to imperfections in the grating pattern, to a resistive phase divider 35 deriving 10 signals phase displaced by 36 degrees. These are fed via zero crossing detectors 40 to logic circuitry 42 which determines from the relative phase of the photocell outputs the direction of movement and pulses a reversible counter 45 connected to for example a visual display and a chart recorder. The position of the reading head is adjustable by loosening a screw (53), Fig.3 (not shown) so that a nut (54) may be moved in a slot (51) to produce the desired gap (30). The angle of the reading head and hence of the index lines relative to the scale grating is adjustable by an eccentric mechanism (56). Modifications: (1) only two photo-cells may be used. (2) the scale grating may be of cylindrical, frusto-conical or circular form. (3) either the scale grating or the index grating may be moved. (4) the scale grating may be of transmissive form.
