Abstract

1,130,881. Steroidal - #<SP>4,9(10)</SP> - dien - 3 - ones and derivatives thereof. MERCK & CO. Inc. 4 Nov., 1965 [6 Aug., 1964], No. 32026/64. Heading C2U. 17α - Haloethynyl - 17# - hydroxy - 13- (C 1-4 alkyl) - gona - 4,9(10) - dien - 3 - ones (halo referring to chloro and bromo only), the 13-methyl representative of which is novel, are prepared from the corresponding 17-ones and a halo-acetylide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or a haloacetylenic magnesium halide, the 3-keto group being optionally or, when a magnesium halide is used, necessarily protected by conversion to a group reconvertible to a 3-oxo group by acid hydrolysis and, when necessary, removing the 3-protecting group, the protected 3-keto compounds also being novel. Specified protected 3-keto compounds are the 3-alhylenedioxy-5(10),9(11)- dienes, the 3-(N.pyrrolidinyl)-3,5(10),9( 11)- trienes and 3-ethers of the 3-hydroxy-3,5(10), 9 ( 11 )-trienes The gona-4,9(10)-dien-3-ones are stated to be progestational agents, and they may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers.
