Abstract
1,166,878. Steroid carbonates. MERCK & CO. Inc. 22 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966; 6 March, 1967], No. 68318/67. Heading C2U. Novel 17α - hydroxy - 20 - keto - pregnane- 17 carbonates of the partial structure (wherein Y is H or a halogen; Z is H, α-halo, α-OH, α- or #-alkyl or =CH 2 ; and R is C 1-6 alkyl, cyclohexyl, aryl or aralkyl) are prepared from metal derivatives of the 17 α-ols and appropriate chloroformates. Keto groups may be protected, e.g. as ketals. The steroids of the invention are stated to possess progestational activity and to be of value as estrus-regulating agents, and they may be made up into pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions with suitable carriers.
