Abstract
1,130,261. Percussive tools. ATLAS COPCO A.B. 16 May, 1967 [18 May, 1966], No. 22577/67. Heading B4C. A percussive rock drill comprises a valve 13 for controlling the flow of compressed air to the impact motor and also to a pair of servomotor pistons 41, 43 operatively connected to a flushing water valve 27 such that the flow of water to the tool bit is governed by the flow of air to the impact motor. The water valve 27 is formed as an extension of the servo-piston 41 and is normally loaded by a spring 37 to a closed position shown; the water valve and servo-pistons may be made of plastics material. The cylinders 26 for the servo-pistons 43, 41 are, with the valve 13 in the position shown, exhausted to atmosphere via passages 46, 47, a groove 50 in the valve 13 and port 51. When it is required to run the impact motor slowly and with a minimum flow of flushing water, the valve 13 is turned by a lever 14 to bring a throttle opening 18 therein into communication with an inlet port 17 to the impact motor. In this position of the valve 13, a groove 52 in the latter communicates with the cylinder 26 for the servo-piston 43 via passage 46 thereby moving the water valve 27 so that it uncovers a single port (30, Fig. 4a) for conveying water to the tool steel at a low rate. When a higher rate of flow is required together with a higher impact speed the valve 13 is rotated to cause the groove 52 to communicate with both passages 46, 47 and a port 16 in the valve 13 with the inlet port 17:
