Abstract

1,129,029. Tricyclic amines. C. F. BOEHRINGER & SOEHNE G.m.b.H. 8 March, 1967 [11 March, 1966], No. 10849/67. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of Formula I wherein X is an oxygen or sulphur atom, or a saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched chain hydrocarbon radical containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms, or an oxaethylene, thiaethylene, thiapropylene or carbonyl group, or a valency bond, R 3 is a hydrogen atom or lower alkyl radical, R 1 is a hydrogen atom or hydroxyl group and R 2 is a hydrogen atom, or R 1 and R 2 together represent a further valency bond, are prepared by reducing the corresponding cyano compound in which -CH 2 NH 2 is replaced by -CN, and the compound obtained wherein R 1 is an hydroxy group may then be dehydrated, or where R 1 and R 2 together represent an additional valency bond, may then be hydrogenated. Compounds of Formula I in which R 1 and R 2 both represent hydrogen atoms may also be prepared by hydrogenation of the corresponding unsaturated compounds. Acid addition salts may also be prepared. The nitriles may be obtained by condensing a ketone of Formula III with a nitrile of formula R 3 CH 2 -CN in the presence of a basic condensation agent, whereupon the hydroxy-nitriles obtained are, if desired, subsequently dehydrated, and the products, if desired, selectively hydrogenated with aluminium amalgam. 5;6,7,12 - Tetrahydrodibenzo - [a,d] - cycloocten-12-one is obtained as by-product in the reaction between 12-hydroxy-12-cyanomethyl- 5,6,7,12 - tetrahydrodibenzo - [a,d] - cyclooctene and alcoholic hydrochloric acid.
