Abstract

1,128,100. Piston rings. HEPWORTH & GRANDAGE Ltd. 25 May, 1967 [2 June, 1966], No. 24596/66. Heading F2T. In a spacer-expander for a piston ring 8 comprising an axially split spring ring 2 formed by circumferentially spaced radially-opening U-shaped elements 5 interconnected at their base portions 5a, by integral ties 4, the ties are axially staggered. Slots 3c in the portions 5a and also the slots 3d formed between opposed edges of adjacent portions 5a extend obliquely to the axis of the ring 2. Steps 6 are formed on the limbs 5b of the ring 2 which is formed from a spring steel strip blank 1. In use, Fig. 3, split piston rings 8 supported on the limbs 5d are housed with the ring 2 in a piston ring groove 10, and urged radially against the cylinder wall 12 by engagement with the steps 6. The outer peripheral faces 9 of the rings 8 may be coated with molybdenum or chromium. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) the slots (13) between adjacent elements (5) and the slots (14) in the base portions ( 5a) are parallel to the axis of the spacer-expander ring.
