Abstract

1,127,880. Making composite sheets; jointing by rolling. HENRY WIGGIN & CO Ltd. 4 Sept., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966], No. 40262/67. Headings B3A and B3M. [Also in Division C7] In a process of coating steel with Ni or a Ni containing alloy, the steel surface is cleaned, coated with Cu, then coated with a powder layer of Ni or a Ni containing alloy which is then covered with a foil of Ni or a Ni containing alloy and the composite is hot pressed and finally hot rolled. The Cu coating may be formed by electrolysis, chemical displacement, spray coating or by painting. The powder may be carbonyl Ni, a Ni-Cu alloy containing up to 60% Cu, a Ni-Cr alloy, a Ni-Cr-Fe alloy, a Ni containing stainless steel, or Ni coated Fe or Cr powder. The powder may also contain up to 10% of A1 2 O 3 or ThO 2 . The hot pressing is carried out at 750‹-2000‹ F. at 500- 3000 p.s.i. and the hot rolling at 2000-2400‹ F. The particle size of the powder may be up to 50 microns, preferably 3-10 microns and the foil used is 0.001-0.006 inch thick.
