Abstract
1,127,020. Telescopic support for radiation detector. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G 13 Oot., 1966 [16 Oct., 1965], No. 45821/66. Heading H5R. A telescopic probe for measuring radioactivity comprises a tubular jacket 1 which at its rear end is closed by a cover 3 and has at its front end a securing flange 4, with a plurality of telescopic tubes retractable into the jacket, the innermost tube being provided with a counting tube 8 connected to a recording apparatus. Preferably the innermost tube is provided with a closure plate 10 with a diameter substantially equal to the internal diameter of the jacket at the flanged end thus effectively covering the telescopic system. The plate 10 may have a handle 11 with which the probe may be manually extended. The flanged end of the jacket may also be fitted with a cap 5 which fits over the external diameter of the jacket and is pushed to one side when the probe is erected and replaced as the probe is collapsed. Alternatively a protective covering 6 is employed which cover is projectable with the probe. The probe may be equipped with a spring loaded reel for the cable connecting the detector to the recorder. This reel may be positioned inside the innermost tube as indicated by numeral 9, or may occupy the position 20 shown in dotted line. Preferably the telescopic support is erected and collapsed pneumatically, the necessary compressed air being admitted by knob 19 operating multi-way valve 13 which communicates with pipe 14 admitting air to space 15 to erect the tube and air pipe 16 leading from the valve to space 18 admits air consecutively via conduits 17 to each of the annular spaces surrounding the telescopic sections of the probe as it collapses. As the probe is erected or collapsed, either space 18 or space 15 is connected to the atmosphere via valve 13. Sliding sealing rings 21 on the individual sections maintain an air-tight seal and stops 21<SP>1</SP> co-operate to prevent over-extension. The probe may be arranged on a vehicle (Fig. 2, not shown) for the rapid measurement of a radioactively contaminated area. The plug 12<SP>1</SP> connects the detector via lead 12 to a recording instrument carried inside the vehicle.
