Abstract
1,126,661. Cold cathode tubes. M-O VALVE CO. Ltd., and R. W. YOUNG. 12 Nov., 1965 [19 Nov., 1964; 29 June, 1965], Nos. 47157/64 and 27507/65. Heading H1D. In a gas-filled electric discharge device of the kind including a trigger electrode interposed between an anode and a cold cathode, the cold cathode comprises a mass of solid material adhering to an electrically insulating support, e.g. part of the envelope, at least 30 atomic per cent of which material consists of a metal having a latent heat of vaporization not greater than 50 kilocalories per mole and a vapour pressure at 1000‹ C. of not less than 0À1 torr. The solid material may be a metal which may be incorporated in an alloy and may, for example, comprise Cd, Zn, Mg, Bi, Cs, K or Ba. As shown, the cathode 2 comprises 2 c.c. of Cd, Zn or a Cd-Zn alloy in contact with a W rod 6, and is used in a surge diverter comprising trigger electrode 4 and anode 3. The tube contains argon at a pressure of 0À29 torr. The ready production of Cd and/or Zn vapour upon initiation of a discharge permits the use of lower triggering voltages. Specific dimensions and operating voltages are given. The cathode may alternatively comprise a low melting point alloy of 33À6 Atomic per cent Cd and 66À4 Atomic per cent Sn.
