Abstract

1,034,080. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 19, 1965 [Feb. 17, 1964], No. 6484/64. Heading H1D. Electrodes for a highpressure lamp are manufactured by forming a pinch 14 in a tungsten rod 16 such that its sides project out beyond the periphery of the wire, introducing a pellet of sintered alkaline earth metal oxide on to one or each flat of the pinch, and pushing over the projecting portions of the pinch a tungsten helix to maintain the pellets in position. The electrodes are employed in a lamp (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown), having a filling of mercury, and argon at a pressure of a few torr., supported in an outer phosphorcoated envelope. An auxiliary starting electrode adjacent one of the main electrodes is connected via a resistance within the outer envelope to the other main electrode.
