Abstract
1,124,880. Measuring moisture content. LIGGETT & MYERS TOBACCO CO. June 23, 1967 [June 23, 1966], No. 29013/67. Heading G1N. In apparatus for continuously measuring the moisture content of tobacco comprising a chute 16 and a pair of micro-wave horns 34 for transmitting micro-wave energy therebetween through the tobacco in chute 16, a diverting paddle 22 (or a sliding cover (46), Fig. 4 (not shown), admits tobacco to chute 16 or diverts tobacco according as the level of tobacco in the chute 16 is below or above the level of a photo-electric cell 24 while picker rolls 32 remove tobacco from the bottom of the chute at a predetermined rate. A thermistor 36 is provided for temperature compensation. A removable baseboard (33) is insertable beneath the rolls 32 to enable the tobacco to build up in the chute 16 at the start of a run. The system may be calibrated using samples of known moisture content. In Fig. 5, a switch 56 enables a check to be made on drift of the generator 52. In the embodiment described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown), the cover (46) controls access of the tobacco on a main conveyer to a conveyer (40) leading to the chute 16.
