Abstract
A tablet consists essentially of finely-divided activated carbon and 20-60% wt. of an aliphatic hydrocarbon sulphonate detergent as a binder. Preferably the sodium sulphonate is used and the hydrocarbon group preferably contains 8-18 carbon atoms. Typically, carbon will constitute 50-70% by weight of the tablet. A hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon, e.g. perchloroethylene, solvent may be included in the tablet. Dry-cleaning solvents may be included. The tablets, which may be of any shape, are formed by conventional techniques using a press or briquetting machine with pressures up to 20,000 p.s.i. The weight of a tablet can vary between 0.002 to 1 pound weight. The tablet may be coated, if desired, with a filter aid such as diatomaceous earth, bound by the same adhesive as used for the carbon particles. The tablets may be used to decolorize dirty dry-cleaning solvents. Modifying agents such as diphenyl ether sulphonates, glyceryl esters of higher fatty acids or alkylphenol-ethylene oxide condensates may be added to the binder as detergent diluents. Comparison tablets incorporating binders other than aliphatic hydrocarbon sulphonates are described.
