Abstract

Anti-corrosive coating compositions for metal comprise a finely divided metal powder and an organic ammonium silicate binding agent X(N.R1R2R3R4)2O.YSiO2ZH2 in which R1 R2 R3 and R4 are alkyl or hydroxy alkyl groups containing 1-20 carbon atoms, there being at least one hydroxyalkyl group, and X, Y, Z represent numbers, the ratio T:X varying from 4.5-13.05:1, and Z varying from 0-99. The metal may be Zn (preferred), Al, Pb, Ti, Fe or alloys thereof, free from alkaline material such as CaO, and of particle size 1-50m . The organic ammonium silicate is preferably tetraethanolammonium- or dehydrated methyl triethanolammonium silicate. Suitable proportions are 2.75-3.5 parts by weight metal per part silicate, the latter containing 32% by wt. SiO2. The composition may also contain a stabilizing agent such as PbO (preferred), Pb, Mn, or Zn carbonate, boric or phosphoric acid, or sodium silicofluoride, a thickener such as hydrated magnesium silicate, extenders or pigments such as red lead, zinc oxide, alumina, iron oxide or titania, flexibilizing agents such as mica or bentonite, and glycerine to accelerate drying. The compositions are prepared by dispersing the stabilizer in the silicate binder, removing residual stabilizer, mixing the dispersion with the thickener in an aqueous medium and adding the metal powder.ALSO:Metals e.g. steel panels may be brush-coated with an anti-corrosive paint comprising a finely divided metal powder and an organic ammonium silicate X(N R1 R2 R3 R4)2O.YSiO2ZH2O in which R1 R2 R3 and R4 are alkyl or hydroxyalkyl groups containing 1-20 carbon atoms, there being at least one hydroxyalkyl group, and X Y Z represent numbers, the ratio Y:X varying from 4.5-13.05:1, and 2 varying from 0-99 (see Division C4-5). The metal may be Zn (preferred), Al, Pb, Ti, Fe or alloys thereof, free from alkaline material such as CaO, and of particle size 1-50m . The composition may also contain PbO, PbMu or Zu carbonate, boric or phosphoric acid, sodium silico-fluoride, hydrated magnesium silicate, red lead, zinc oxide, alumina, iron oxide, titania, mica, bentonite or glycerine.
