Abstract

A homogeneous lubricant additive composition comprises (a) an alkaline earth metal salt of an acidic, phosphosulphurized olefin polymer having a Mol. Wt. of at least 10,000, (b) a fatty acid derivative having at least 12 aliphatic carbon atoms selected from alkaline earth metal salts, aliphatic esters, and sulphurized aliphatic esters, (c) a compound selected from Group II metal phosphorothioates, adducts of Group II metal phosphorothioates with an alkylene oxide, di- and tri-esters of phosphorous acid, phosphosulphurized terpenes, and substantially hydrocarbon sulphides or polysulphides, and (d) a polar substituted amine prepared by the reaction at 80 DEG C. or more of an alkylene polyamine (optionally with alkyl or hydroxyalkyl substituents) with a reactant selected from substantially hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid producing compounds wherein the substantially hydrocarbon substituent has at least 50 carbon atoms, and mixtures of said succinic acid producing compound and CS2 in ratio of equivalents of 1:2 to 3:1. A lubricant composition may comprise a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil and 0.1-10% by wt. of (a), 0.01-5% of (b), 0.1-10% of (c) and 1-10% of (d). An optional ingredient (e) may be an alkaline earth metal salt of an oil-soluble sulphonic acid in amount 0.1-10% by wt. Other optional additives include pour-point depressants (e.g. polymeric alkyl methacrylate), rust inhibiting agents, e.g. tetrapropylene-substituted succinic acid or monoalkyl phenyl ether of tetraethylene glycol), anti-foam agents (e.g. polymeric alkyl siloxane or polymeric alkyl methacrylates)' odour improving agents (e.g. pine oil) and colouring agents. Anti-oxidants such as oil-soluble hindered phenols and naphthols and aromatic carboxylic acids and esters (lists given) may also be included.
