Abstract

1470649 Lubricants ETHYL COOPER Ltd 3 April 1974 [12 April 1973] 17728/73 Heading C5F [Also in Division C2] A lubricating composition comprises a major amount of a lubricating oil and a minor amount of an additive compound of the general formula wherein (a) each of R, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> when taken singly is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group contaming from 1 to 15 carbon atoms, an aryl group containing from 6 to 15 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl group containing from 4 to 10 carbon atoms; (b) each of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> when taken singly is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group containing from 1 to 15 carbon atoms, an aryl group containing from 6 to 15 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group containing from 4 to 10 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group containing from 2 to 10 carbon atoms or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> taken together form the group -CHY.CY=CY- in which Y is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group or R<SP>1</SP> together with R<SP>2</SP> form an alkylidene group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and (c) R<SP>5</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 15 carbon atoms; prepared by the sulphurization method specified below, or wherein said additive is the oil-soluble sulphur containing norbornenyl product resulting from sulphurizing with elemental sulphur a compound having the general formula wherein R, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are as hereinbefore defined at a temperature of up to 180‹ C., said sulphurization being carried out using from 0À1 to 4 moles of S per mole of the compound to be sulphurized and in the absence of a solvent or in the presence of a non-polar solvent. The sulphurized product of Formula A above preferably constitutes 0À1 to 10% by wt. of the composition. The compositions may also contain other conventional additives. The compositions may also be prepared as concentrates comprising a minor amount of a lubricating oil and a major amount of the product of Formula A above which may be diluted with further quantities of oil prior to use.
