Abstract

1,121,071. Welding by fusion. FAIREY ENG. Ltd. 9 March, 1965 [12 Dec., 1963], No. 49216/63. Heading B3R. In a device for feeding backing gas adjacent the weld zone in the interior of a hollow vessel 11 being rotated for external circumferential welding, a gas nozzle 12 maintained vertical by a counterweight 26 is universally pivoted to an articulated arm 10, the parts 13, 14 of which are movable by an actuating member 50 external of the vessel from the operative position shown to an in line position in which the device can be withdrawn vertically through a hole 17 in the vessel 11. The device has a hub 16 which can be held in the hole 17. Inert or reducing gas is fed from a fitting 35 on the hub 16 to the nozzle 12. The parts 13, 14 are articulated by a sliding rack 41 and pinion 38 or by a lever and crank mechanism. Welding is effected using a shield of gas or flux.
