A permanent pattern is produced on the surface of a material having comparatively low absorption characteristics for a frequency range of radiated electromagnetic energy by applying to the surface in the desired pattern, e.g. by printing, a substance including finely divided material having comparatively high absorption characteristics for said frequency range, the substance having a component which is heat bondable to the material of the surface, and exposing the applied substance to radiated electromagnetic energy including substantially said frequency range, to raise the temperature of the applied substance to a level at which bonding occurs. The substance may be an ink including a pigment powder forming the finely divided material e.g. carbon, (graphite) manganese dioxide, iron oxide or nickel oxide, and a base including at least one component capable of being heat-bonded to the material of the surface. The base may be a suspension of the component in a volatile liquid carrier and the component may be of the same material as the surface e.g. a synthetic plastics material such as polypropylene, polyvinyl, stryene and cellulose acetates and nitrates. The radiant energy source may vary from infra-red to ultra-voilet depending upon the absorption characteristics of the finely divided material used and may be an infra-red bulb. The energy may be radiated in pulses e.g. 0À01-0À1 seconds. The ink may be applied by stencil, silk screen, press, brush or electrostatic methods. A typewriter ribbon may be impregnated with the ink and the ink deposited on the surface by typing.
