Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1119799/C2/1> wherein M is H or an alkali metal, X is -SO2R or -COR, and R is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl. The compounds are prepared by reacting the hydrochloride of a compound of the formula <FORM:1119799/C2/2> with a compound of formula RCOCl or RSO2Cl. The 1 - (aminophenyl) - 5 - mercapto - tetrazole hydrochlorides used as starting materials may be prepared by reacting an aminoacetanilide with thiophosgene to give an acetamidophenyl isothiocyanate which is then reacted with an azide to give a 1 - (acetamidophenyl) - 5 - mercapto - tetrazole which is in turn hydrolysed with ionic HCl to the desired product. An alternative process involves reacting an acetamidophenyl-thio-semicarbazide with HNO2.
