Abstract

<PICT:1118728/C1/1> Heat-softened thermoplastic sheet material is shaped by clamping it over a mould and then rotating the mould so as to cause the sheet to be pressed into conformity with it by centrifugal force. The mould may be carried by a vertically walled centrifuge or by a horizontally walled centrifuge and shot may be placed on the sheet to augment the centrifugal force. In the embodiment illustrated in the Figure, the mould 2, for making a corrugated building sheet, is mounted on a horizontal centrifuge and carries peripheral clamp 4 for securing the sheet. The clamped sheet is heated by a radiant heater and the centrifuge simultaneously rotated to shape the sheet in the desired manner. Apertures are made in the finished article by spikes 3 and two sides of the article are trimmed during rotation by blades 8 carried by counter-balanced levers 7 pivoted to the mould at 10.
