Abstract
1,118,740. Inflatable mattresses. O. H. DRAGER [trading as DRAGERWERK HEINR & BERNH DRAGER]. 23 Dec., 1965 [24 Dec., 1964], No. 54741/65. Heading A4M. An air matress having separately inflatable, interdigitated chambers 11, 12 is inflated in a controlled cycle by a control apparatus including a pneumatically driven rotary valve 5, 6 which is operated such that the chambers 11, 12 are alternately inflated and vented to atmosphere but with the provision that neither chamber is vented until the other has been inflated. The air supply 1 is delivered through a pressure regulator 2 to a pressure chamber 3 fitted at one end with the valve 5, 6 which comprises a stationary part 5 with ports 9, 10 and 17-20 and a rotary disc 6 with a semi-circular port 7 and a recess 8. The disc 6 is spring urged 23 into engagement with the stationary part 5 and is provided with a stem 21 having a cam slot 21a which co-operates with a follower block carried by a sleeve 22 which is reciprocated by a bellows 28 to rotate the disc 6. In operation, starting from the position shown in Fig. 1, one chamber 12 communicates through a duct 14 and ports 10, 7 with a pressure chamber 3 whilst the other chamber 11 is vented to atmosphere through ducts 13 and 15, port 17, recess 8 and port 19. Simultaneously, air is delivered through a duct 35 to a chamber 34 of the bellows 28 to move the partition 29 and hence the sleeve 22. Resultant rotation of the disc 6 causes both chambers 11, 12 to be put into communication with the pressure chamber 3 by means of the ports 9, 10 both communicating with the disc port 7. Simultaneously pressure is applied to the bellows chamber 32 to return the partition to its central position.. The valve disc 6 is correspondingly rotated to allow deflation of the mattress chamber 12 and of the bellows chamber 34. Resulting movement of the partition 29 causes pressure to be restored to both mattress chambers 11, 12. Further movement restores the starting situation of Fig. 1 with one mattress chamber 11 deflated.
