Advance of a coal-cutter or other stoping machine produces two out-of-phase pulse trains to advance a stylus in a drum-type recorder. Movement of a coal cutter produces two out-ofphase pulse trains, corresponding to a repeated sequence of pairs of bits, the two bits of a pair being in parallel and the sequence being 00, 01, 11, 10, or the reverse, depending on the direction of movement. In Fig. 9, the pairs 01, 10, 00 are recognized by ANDs 26a, 27a, 28a, respectively, the first of 01, 10 to arrive setting a corre sponding storage element 30a, 32a. which prevents subsequent setting of the other by means of ANDs 29a, 35. The pairs 01, 10 also set and reset, respectively, a storage element 33a. When 00 arrives, ANDs 31a, 36 are enabled to respond to the set states of elements 30a, 32a, respectively, and the reset and set states respectively of element 33a to produce an add or subtract pulse C or D. AND 28a resets the storage elements after a delay. Thus an add or subtract pulse C or D is produced according as 01 precedes or follows 10 respectively. Fig. 8 (not shown), shows a modification which can only produce add pulses, ANDs 35, 36 being omitted, the former being replaced by a straight connection from 27a to 32a. The arrangements are insensitive to some spurious pulses. The add/subtract pulses drive a motor to rotate a potentiometer wiper to supply a voltage to a pen recorder. As an alternative, the pulses of the sequence can be fed direct to overlapping windings (Fig. 13, not shown) to produce a magnetic, field with which a permanent magnet aligns itself to rotate the potentiometer wiper.
