Abstract
Curable epoxy resins containing at least 15 wt. per cent of halogen and having an epoxy equivalency greater than 1 are the reaction products of (1) an acid catalysed phenol-aldehyde condensate, (2) a halogen free polyglycidyl of a polyhydric phenol, and (3) a halogenated polyhydric phenol. The novolac resin (2) may also contain halogen. Components (1), (2) and (3) may be reacted in the presence of LiOH, NaOH or KOH at 50-200 DEG C., the reaction being stopped whilst the resultant resin is still curable. The curable halogenated resins may be thermoset by further heating at 50-200 DEG C. or may be cured by conventional catalysts and reactive hardeners for the curing of epoxy resins. The curable halogenated resins are useful as laminating resins and adhesive binders, in tooling and abrasive wheel applications, and in electric relays, gears and bearings.
