In an impact forging machine according to Specification 1,112,182, compressed air admitted into chamber 25 for raising the main piston 3, is further compressed during the impact stroke and is subsequently passed into the combustion chamber 9. The piston 3 is connected by rod 2 to the main ram 1 carrying the upper die part 16. The impact stroke is performed by combustion of fuel injected into chamber 9 by atomizer 13 and ignited by spark plug 21. During the impact stroke, compressed-air admission valve 26 closes and the air in chamber 25 is further compressed and forced through valve 23 into an accumulator 24 from which it is passed through inlet valve 12 to scavenge and pressurize the combustion chamber 9; alternatively the compressed air may pass directly into the combustion chamber. An exhaust valve 11 and vent valve 14 are fitted to the combustion chamber. The valve 23 may close before the piston 3 reaches the bottom of its stroke which is then cushioned by the trapped air. The machine may have opposed rams as described in Specification 1,112,181 and may be controlled automatically as described in Specification 1,112,183.
