Abstract

1,114,781. Drawing; forging. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 4 Feb., 1966 [17 Feb., 1965], No. 6881/65. Headings B3H and B3P. A method of making a thin walled tube by wall thinning of a tubular blank 11 comprises forcing a plug 13 through the blank whilst the blank is held in a close fitting containing vessel 5 resistant to internal pressure, the plug 13 being forced through the bore by the application of a primary hydraulic liquid under a pressure P1 on one side of the plug, a secondary hydraulic pressure P2 being applied on the other side of the plug. An apparatus for performing the method comprises the containing vessel 5 which is constructed of longitudinal segments having mating radial faces, a thin rubber outer sheath 9 and a pressure-tight cylinder 1 which is closed at its lower end by a plug 2 and at its upper end by a ram 15. The blank 11 has an end flange 12 which engages the end surface of the container 5 through an annular end plate 10. When the ram 15 is lowered the primary hydraulic liquid acts on the plug and on the outside of the container 5. Alternatively, the primary hydraulic fluid may act only on the plug and hydraulic liquid from a separate source is applied to the outer surface of the sheath 9. The method is described with reference to the production of a molybdenum tube 1À00 inch outside diameter and 0À906 inch bore from a blank of the same outside diameter and a bore of 0À125 inch. It is also stated that fins &c. may be formed on the outside of the tube.
