Abstract

1,114,365. Printing processes &c. DURIRON CO. Inc. 3 May, 1966 [10 May, 1965], No. 19564/66. Heading B6C. In a two-colour lithographic offset printing process an oil-based ink and a water-based ink of a different colour are applied consecutively to a specially prepared forme. The latter is preferably of polytetrafluoroethylene which has been so treated that one surface portion is repellent to both inks, a second surface portion is receptive to both inks whilst a third surface portion is selectively receptive to one of the inks only. The apparatus shown in connection with the process is a rotary offset press in which the plate cylinder receives ink from two roller trains each of which supplies an ink of a different colour and base. In the preparation of the described plate one face of a sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene is chemically or electrically etched prior to coating with a resist of a light-sensitive albumen. The etched surface is receptive to both oil and water-based inks. The coating is contacted by a negative with a translucent or transparent area of the required shape before subjection to a light source. The unexposed resist is then washed off leaving an area of waterinsoluble exposed resist corresponding to the translucent or transparent area which is receptive to oil-based ink but repellent to waterbased ink. A second negative having ultraviolet opaque areas-one corresponding to the translucent or transparent area of the first negative-is next applied to the surface, whereupon it is subjected to an ultra-violet light source. This destroys the etching in those areas beneath the second negative not covered by the opaque areas such that the previously etched surface is smoothed and made repellent to both ink forms. Thus a plate is produced having three forms of surface one, 18, Fig. 6, receptive to oil-based ink but repellent to water, one, 14a (etched), receptive to both ink forms and one, 14 (smooth), repellent to both such forms.
