Abstract
Ore-coke pellets of high strength and containing reduced matter are manufactured by pelletizing under sprays of water finely divided ore mixed with coking coal, coking the green pellets formed in a finely divided heat carrier and finally cooling them. Minor amounts of bitumen or pitch or an inorganic binding agent such as bentonite may be added to the mixture, to increase the strength of the green pellets, which may be dried out at 500 DEG to 700 DEG C. in a heat carrier, before coking. The heat carrier may be preheated to 1000 DEG to 1400 DEG C. for coking. Coals with a volatile content between 17 and 40% and a swelling index between 1 and 9 are most suitable, and may be added slightly in excess of the stoichiometric amount required to reduce the ore. All finely-divided ores and ore concentrates are suitable as the initial ore.
