Abstract

1,111,615. Mechanical seals. CRANE PACKING Ltd. 13 May, 1965 [14 May, 1964], No. 20030/64. Heading F2B. A rotary shaft 4, e.g. a pump shaft, is sealed where it extends through a housing 1 by a mechanical seal comprising a non-rotatable soft packing ring 9 in sealing contact with the housing and urged, as by springs 13, into facial rubbing sealing contact with a hard material ring 5 rotatable with and sealed to the shaft. The ring 9 is mounted in a metal ring 10 and engages the wall of a recess 3 in the housing. The ring 5 is secured to the shaft by screws 8 and sealed to the shaft by an 0-ring 6. Cooling fluid is supplied through a passage 14 in the housing. To facilitate assembly the seal parts are each formed in two or more arcuate segments.
