Abstract

1,110,907. Tapping molten metal. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 18 Feb., 1966, No. 7247/66. Heading F4B. A device for controlling the flow rate of molten material by partially blocking a taphole 4 of a rotary furnace 1 comprises refractory cylinders 5 having a steel tube 6 therein, movable towards the tap-hole on guides 7 driven via rollers 8 by a motor 9, the motor, and hence the rate of flow, being controlled by an automatic weighing device attached to a metal receiving vessel 11. Tapping. is initiated by oxygen, blown through a flexible line 14, valve 15 and the tubing 6, burning away a clay plug; the oxygen can also be supplied to clear any blockages occurring during tapping. Further lengths of steel tubing 12 and refractory cylinders are added as required to replace erosion loss. The refractory cylinders may be replaced by refractory material cast around the metal core. In another embodiment, the cylinders 5 are of a smaller diameter than the tap-hole and are inserted therein producing an annular flow passage. The axis of rotation of the furnace is at 30'degrees to the horizontal.
