Abstract

1,110.718. Automatic tension control. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 July, 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 44830/65. Headings DID and D1J. [Also in Division G3] Yarn tension is controlled by (a) a yarn guide positioned between a supply or collecting passage and a yarn handling machine, the guide being movable about a mean position in response to tension variations, (b) an electro-magnetic clutch-brake system to drive the package, and (c) a means, e.g. a potentiometer, which is operatively connected to the yarn guide, responsive therewith to tension variations, for controlling excitation of the electro-magnetic clutch-brake. The electrical signal from the potentiometer can control the excitation of the clutch-brake system via a circuit, see Fig. 4 (not shown), so that in the mean position of the guide there is no excitation of the electro-magnetic clutch or brake. Preferably the package is driven by a d.c. electric motor. As shown in Fig. 3 the clutch 18 and disc brake 21 are mounted on a common shaft 23, which also carries the package carrier 24, running in bearings 22, 27. The clutch and brake actuating coils, 17, 20 respectively, are mounted on base support 16. The drive pulley 28 is connected to the clutch plate 19 and runs about bearings 27. An increase in yarn tension causes greater excitation of clutch coils 17 and less of brake coils 20 and vice versa. The electric motor may be connected directly to shaft 23. The yarn may optionally pass through fixed guides in addition to the moving guide, see Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown). The yarn may be of a synthetic thermoplastic resin and may be fed to or from a multiposition drawing machine. A traverse means can be used to lay the yarn if it is being wound onto the package.
