Abstract
A novel N - phenyl - N1 - dimethyl urea <FORM:1110644/C2/1> is obtained when (a) 4-dimethyl-sulphonamidophenyl isocyanate is reacted with dimethylamine in a molar ratio of about 1:1; or (b) 4-chlorosulphonyl-phenyl isocyanate is reacted with dimethylamine in the presence of an acid-binding agent in a molar ratio of about 1:2:1, or (e) 4-dimethyl-sulphonamido-aniline is reacted with dimethyl-carbamic acid chloride by itself or in the presence of an acid-binding agent; or (d) N-(4-sulphonamido-phenyl)-N1-dimethyl urea is reacted with a methylating agent; or (e) N-phenyl-N1-dimethyl urea is reacted with dimethyl sulphamic acid chloride in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The urea derivative is used as a herbicide. Starting material for reaction (a) is prepared by reacting 4 - dimethyl - sulphonamido - aniline with phosgene, giving 4-dimethyl-sulphonamido-phenyl isocyanate.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise an N-phenyl-N\sv-dimethyl urea of formula, <FORM:1110644/A5-A6/1> They can be used to combat weeds in crops of maize, flax, peas, cotton, carrots and anions. Application can be carried out before or after the emergence of the weeds to be destroyed.
