Abstract

1,110,169. Zig-zag folded electrode assemblies. VARTA A.G. 23 Dec., 1966 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 57791/66. Heading H1B. In an accumulator electrode assembly the plates of one polarity (1), before folding, are in the form of a chain of rectangular plates electrically connected each to the next along, or close to, one side of the chain by short webs (4) permitting the plates to be folded in a zigzag manner to become parallel to each other, the said plates being enclosed by a U-section continuous separator (3), and the plates of the other polarity (2) being similarly electrically connected in one or more chains along, or close to, one side of the chain, and interleaved with the plates of the enclosed chain by zig-zag folding of the assembled plates. The plates of the uncovered chain may lie in contact with one arm only of the separator or may be disposed on either side of the enclosed plate chain in any desired sequence, e.g. alternatively, as in Figs. 1-3. There may be two uncovered chains, both on one side of the covered chain, or one on each side. The chains of opposite polarity may be vertically staggered so that each plate in part has no counter-electrode. After the first zig-zag folding, a fold at or near the middle of the assembly may be folded back so as to reverse the sense of the fold, so bringing the plates originally at the ends of the assembly together in the middle, while the plates adjacent the fold become the new end plates. The plate chain of one polarity may have an additional plate at one end, which is folded back into one of the folds of the assembly.
