Abstract

In a method of making tinplate, steel strip is tinplated, hot brightened in a furnace, coated with <PICT:1110071/C6-C7/1> a film of oil which is applied in an amount between 1.0 and 5.0 grams per base box, and cold reduced to the desired gauge, an aqueous chromate containing solution being applied to the oiled surfaces during the cold reduction. The oil, which may be cottonseed oil or palm oil is applied in an electrostatic or emulsion type oiler and serves to lubricate the strips during cold reduction. The cold reduction takes place in a mill 11 comprising two four-high stands 12A, 12B and tensioning devices 14A, 14B. After passing the first roller stand 12A the oil thickness is reduced to 0.5 to 2 grams per base box which is insufficient to interfere with the action of a 1% to 2% solution of chromic acid sprayed from spray pipes, 15A, 15B. The chromic acid solution is pumped from a tank 16 which may contain a heater 18 and serves both to cool the strip and to impart a film containing 0.5 to 0.6 milligrams per square foot of chromium to the tinplate. After passing the sprays the strip passes through a hot air drier 19. Specific examples of tinplate production are given and a graph Fig. 3 (not shown) indicates the rolling force required for various thicknesses of oil film.
