Abstract

1,108,014. Mineral-mining method. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 27 Aug., 1965 [29 May, 1964], No. 22380/64. Heading E1F. Formation of stableholes are avoided in longwall mining by working a face in two portions, each portion having a face length greater than one half of the overall length. The portions are mined alternately by a mining machine having cutting means at either end or by two mining machines that cut in opposite directions. Cutting of each portion is preferably outwards and whilst cutting is occurring in one portion the length of a snakable conveyer extending along the other portion is advanced towards the face of that portion. Preferably the conveyer is used to guide the mining machine(s) into the correct position with respect to the portions of the face at the start of a cutting traverse thereof.
