Abstract
A heel has, at least at its rear part, a slit or recess extending upwardly from the lower surface of the heel but terminating short of the upper surface so as to form a surrounding skirt 60, 160, 260 (Figs. 3, 16, Figs. not shown), at least at its rear part, which flexes outwardly on contact with the ground so that the impact is received by a portion 62, 162 (Figs. 6, 16) of the heel located inwardly of the skirt and beneath the apex of the calcaneum. The outer surface of the skirt does not wear and provides a shroud for the impact bearing portion as the latter becomes worn. The recess 148 (Fig. 5) may extend upwardly and then outwardly, and the skirt may be connected to the heel by webs 56. The undersurface of the heel has a convex portion 42. In another embodiment (Figs. 11-17) the flat undersurface of the weight bearing portion 158 is normally in the same plane as the bottom surface of the skirt 160, and is separated along a straight line 163 from the upwardly and rearwardly sloping impact bearing portion 162. Areas 165 along the underside of the forward part of the heel are undercut and terminate in a groove 117. The upper surface of the heel is concave, and the heels are attached to the shoe by nails.
