Abstract

A ceramic nuclear fuel powder is mixed with a solution of a binder in an excess of an organic chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent to form a slurry which is spray-dried to produce granules of the fuel and binder. The nuclear fuel may be UO2, UO2-PuO2, or uranium carbide. The binder solution may comprise polybutylmethacrylate and dibutyl phthalate dissolved in excess trichlorethylene. Another suitable solvent is carbon tetrachloride. Suitable apparatus is described with reference to a drawing in which a slurry of UO2 powder and the binder solution is fed to a rotating disc type spray dryer and contacted with heated air. The granules formed are collected, the air and solvent vapour filtered, and the solvent recovered. A perforated tube acts as an air rake to remove product from the walls of the dryer. Alternatively a nozzle atomizer type of spray dryer may be used. The granules may be compacted, sintered, and the binder removed to form fuel elements.
